The 2018 season is not yet over, but for the New York Giants it may as well be.
As far as the Giants are (realistically) concerned games have basically lost their meaning beyond draft slotting and which players can step up and provide answers going forward. So, we decided that it was time to stop previewing games and start previewing the 2019 NFL Draft.
We got a jump start on it last week when Mark Schofield joined us to talk about the quarterback position.
This week we take a look at the offensive line position, which remains a unit in dire need of talent, despite being completely rebuilt since the end of the 2017 season. There will be plenty of time to dive deeply in to all of the offensive line prospects, and this is just a brief overview as we begin our look into the position in advance of the 2019 off-season.
As it stands now, the Giants are locked in with Nate Solder as their starting left tackle, and Will Hernandez looks like a long-term answer at left guard. They might have stumbled upon an answer at right guard when the Los Angeles Rams surprisingly cut Jamon Brown. If so, they will still need to find long-term (or at least adequate) answers at center and right tackle.
The Giants currently have the number one overall pick in the 2019 draft, however an easier schedule and the aggressively poor play of the Oakland Raiders might knock them down the draft order some. If so, they might fall in to the range where Alabama left tackle Jonah Williams provides value.
Otherwise, there are several options for the Giants, such as Wisconsin right tackle David Edwards or Kansas State right tackle Dalton Risner. Likewise, Wisconsin center Tyler Biadasz might interest them.
Take a listen to our podcast for a more in-depth breakdown of those players, as well as some other top prospects who could help rebuild the Giants’ line.
