Jason Witten should listen to Jason Garrett and play one more season

Jason Garrett is pleading with Jason Witten to play one more season in Dallas.

Dallas Cowboys’ legendary tight end Jason Witten is thinking about calling it a career and joining the Monday Night Football booth. Head coach Jason Garrett, however, is pleading with Witten to play at least one more season.

It’s understandable why Garrett would be in his tight end’s ear as he tries to convince him to play one more year. The team needs him, and Witten should, at the very least, listen to what Garrett has to say.

Before I dive into why it would be wise for Witten to continue to catch passes from Dak Prescott in the 2018 season, let me make a confession: I am a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, one who has been scarred for the foreseeable future by the puzzling moves Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made over the past decade.

It seems like every time Dallas is on the cusp of finally returning to the glory days of the ’70s and ’90s, Jones does something that makes most of us in Cowboy Nation cry in painful agony. That happened (again) this offseason when he decided to cut Dez Bryant.

We have yet to recover from that shock when we learned Witten, our sure-handed tight end, was going to retire. Knowing the receiving unit and tight end group would be young and inexperienced, Garrett is, per Chris Mortensen, doing all he can to talk Witten off of the retirement cliff.

For the sanity of all of us in Cowboy Nation, he should listen to him.

The loss of Bryant is going to be one Dallas will have a hard time recovering from, and Witten’s veteran leadership is needed more than ever. Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott can’t do it on their own (not yet, anyway), and the best thing for them is to have some sure hands and steady veteran leadership.

From all Cowboys fans, please don’t go.
