Jason Kelce thinks Cowboys fans “fell in love because they’re winners” and don’t have emotional ties

It’s officially CowboysEagles week.

The Dallas Cowboys will play a game of significance in Philadelphia for the first time in three years this Sunday, and that’s certainly worth saying out loud. The City of Brotherly Love just happens to be the last place that the Cowboys won on the road so maybe they’ll pick up their first win away from AT&T Stadium this season against the Eagles, but taking on the defending Super Bowl Champions that are coming off of a bye is a tall order.

With it being the week of this particular rivalry that means that rivalry-like discussions are happening all over the place. Eagles center Jason Kelce took to the airwaves at 94WIP in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning and he accused the Cowboys fan base of being comprised strictly of fair-weather fans.

I don’t really know what it was like to beat the Cowboys when they were really, really good. Since I’ve been in the league… the Giants, Cowboys, Eagles, we’ve all kind of taken our share, Redskins. There’s certainly a rivalry there, we play them twice a year, everything’s heightened up. I would say mostly I just don’t think a lot of players, in particular me, just don’t really like the franchise or the organization, what it stands for, what it’s always stood for. This goes back to the lockout when they were getting replacement players and how outspoken the Dallas Cowboys franchise was and ending that. I’ve just never really appreciated the organization and what it’s fans really stood for, a lot of fair-weather people from across the country that just kind of fell in love because they’re winners instead of having any type of emotional connection to the team whatsoever. There’s a ton of players they got that I’ve got a lot of respect for. Sean Lee, Travis Frederick unfortunately’s going through some serious health concerns, but he’s a tremendous player. I’ve got some respect for some of their guys it’s more the organization that you don’t like.

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1995. They’ve won two playoff games since (one of them coincidentally against the Eagles). There’s no new fans hanging around the confines of Cowboys fandom because they “fell in love” due to the Cowboys gigantic streaks of winning.

It’s a bit silly for Kelce to make this type of assertion for any fan base anywhere. The Eagles won the Super Bowl and that gives them the right to talk about whatever they want in terms of on-field accomplishments, but it also means that they themselves are now experiencing an influx of bandwagon fans. There are an inordinate amount of Cowboys fans who have more than their fair share of emotional ties to the team for whatever reason is specific to them, whether Jason Kelce is able to realize that or not.

These are the type of things that happen during rivalry weeks. It makes for bulletin board material, but the current Cowboys aren’t exactly great at using stuff like that to their advantage. And the fact that that’s as true as it is, and that everyone continues to root for them, is more than enough proof that Cowboys fans are as deep and as loyal as they come.
